Here's what we were working with - a large, open backyard in Cottage Grove with a raised deck and zero usable ground-level space. The homeowners had a vision for a patio that would actually connect their back door to the yard and give them somewhere to sit, gather, and enjoy being outside. That's exactly what we set out to build.

We started by laying out the full footprint with spray paint and string lines right on the turf. Getting the layout dialed in before a single shovel hits the ground is something we take seriously. The shape had to flow naturally with the curved edges of the yard and tie into the existing deck staircase - not an easy thing to pull off, but it makes a huge difference in the finished product. You can see the gravel base and border pavers being set early in the process, which gives you a real sense of how the pattern takes shape from the ground up.

For the main field, we used RCP Windom Pavers in Kodiak Sand - a large-format paver with a clean, modern look. The inner border is RCP Accent Textured in Onyx, which creates that dark contrasting band you see framing the patio. The outer border is RCP Reno in Kodiak Sand. Three different paver products, all working together to give the patio a finished, custom feel rather than a cookie-cutter look. The curved seat wall is built with Belgard Brisa block in Newport Grey - solid construction with a flat cap that's actually comfortable to sit on.

This job ran through some genuinely tough summer conditions - peak heat and poor air quality days. We kept showing up and kept the quality where it needed to be. That's not something we mention to pat ourselves on the back. We mention it because it matters. When you hire someone to do work like this, you want to know they won't cut corners when things get hard.

The finished patio connects directly to the back door, wraps around toward the deck stairs, and opens up into a generous seating area anchored by the curved Belgard seat wall. Silver Fond du Lac stepping stones tie in the surrounding landscape. What used to be a plain grass yard is now a space the whole family can actually use.
