Some retaining walls look fine until they're not. This one in St. Paul had already been pieced together as a DIY block wall - and when a car hit it, the whole thing gave way. That's when we got the call. We tore out everything that was there and started completely fresh.
Here's what most people don't think about with DIY retaining walls: it's not just about stacking something up and hoping it holds. In Minnesota, the freeze-thaw cycle will find every weakness in a poorly built wall - and it won't take long. The old block wall here didn't have a chance once it took impact damage. The structure just wasn't built to handle real-world stress.
We brought in over 25 tons of Gitche Gumee boulders for this one. Natural stone is one of the most durable retaining wall materials you can use, and when it's installed with proper excavation and a solid base, it performs on a completely different level than a DIY block wall. The boulders interlock with weight and friction working in your favor - not against you.
The finished wall wraps the front yard corner and ties right into the existing landscaping. Colorful perennials and garden beds sit right up against the wall and honestly make the whole front of the property feel intentional - like it was always supposed to look this way. That's the difference between a wall that just holds dirt and one that actually fits the property.
Getting the foundation right is what separates a wall that lasts decades from one that fails in a few years. Proper grading, correct boulder placement, and knowing how to work with the grade of the yard - that's the work that happens before it ever looks good. We take that part just as seriously as the finished look.
